Promoting Global LGBTI Equality with United Nations
#FreeAndEqualNaija is LLMN's annual awareness campaign to promote and advance human rights for minorities across Nigeria every International Human Rights Day on December 10th.
#FreeAndEqualNaija is an adaptation of the United Nation's 'Free & Equal' campaign for LGBTI equality and aims to give prominence to the protection of the rights of minorities in Nigeria, including LGBTI individuals who are prone to high levels of discrimination and abuse.
Our campaign extends to cover human rights issues of Nigerian women, people living with disabilities, internally displaced persons and more. We believe that when the most vulnerable Nigerians are protected and their rights guaranteed, only then can we claim to be free and equal.
Through the #FreeAndEqualNaija campaign, human rights defenders in Nigeria have initiated an awareness of the need to include sexual orientation and gender identity in the broader spectrum of human rights advocacy in Nigeria.
Beyond public engagement and enlightenment, the campaign forges partnerships with the mainstream human rights movement, as well as religious and opinion leaders.
Members of the public are invited to share stories and show support for a more tolerant Nigeria. The Nigerian government is also entreated to update its legal and policy apparatus to be in line with standards recommended by the African Commission on Human and Peoples Rights and the United Nations Human Rights Council.
